It is very hard to switch between a boss who needs a memo formally for everything, you cannot dress how you want, then move to one who will write about "dicks in the alleyway" in a PowerPoint. It is PBS vs HBO.
Good managers team-build. What culture are we going to have? The clients? Ours? Both?
I assure you I would have been fired from my last 10 jobs if I made a Power-Point with a movie quote about a man with a hard-on.
I walked into a culture where this is acceptable and it is very shocking.
Ramblings...
I am going to look at that PowerPoint, and then ask myself - why have I gone home every day for 20 years hating myself because I chose the word "you" instead of "we" trying to keep the seas calm at work.
If I have a choice I'd probably pick the culture where someone can make a joke and not remain in fear. Yet how do you know what culture you are in to begin with?
I hate fear culture. I hate double standards. I hate living in a time when people cannot decide what culture they want (formal or casual) and it is exceptionally polarized.
If you do not have time to build your team culture reducing fear, not much is going to get done but retaliation and politics.
Your first message out the gate was "I'm going to send people after you if you don't delete files". Which files? I have some, you have some, we all learn from each other to produce something better. Our common goal is supposed to be protecting...the client, or our nation..or nothing. I thought your product was "open sourced"?
Is it the "training" that is uniquely valuable enough to shred?
Maybe it is not protection at all, it is developing for others to make decisions off of.
- Are we going to openly discuss that there have been suicides and people rolled out on a stretcher here?
- Or are we going to be the liability prevention specialists running around with NDA's? Don't discuss it -we don't care if it happens again. Paid off pretty good for his family. Or the changers?
- Are we fixing fear and hate or are we going to wallow in a nice environment of retaliation and punching back until the boss wins because he simply has power?
- What is our mission? What gap are you trying to fill by having me here? What job am I accepting? Are we doing good cop bad cop? Did you just need a body to schlep into a project?
- What about cybersecurity are we aiming to fix? How is it going to add value to the client?
- Are you body shopping roles to just make some money and I'm a bot to fill it in?
You skipped establishing the goals. Should I suggest you establish them? You seem like someone very confident you have everything sorted out. Probably going to reject any suggestion of team-building.
Go out and get shit done.
Ok, yet you assigned me to a project where the actual activity is not "doing anything". I've had that job before and I hate "not doing anything" jobs.
